<p>There simply is no mission without purpose. Without purpose you are left with a series of misguided, unfocused, lonely, irrational sets of behavior and action that ultimately leads toward nothingness or worse yet oblivion! This may be familiar to some of you as we all have a friend or two that is consistently hopping from job to job or from one deep meaningful relationship to yet another torrid love affair. We all know people that can&#8217;t make tough decisions even if their very life depended on it. Don&#8217;t get me started on our general sense of societal malaise and obvious lack of creativity. It seems that today&#8217;s fast paced high powered world is simply marred with mediocrity; substandard ideas, from mindless people seeking marginal results. If this describes you or someone close to you, don&#8217;t get upset, I&#8217;m just the messenger! You see without a clear purpose, all of us fall victim to this kind of thinking and we all participate in our own destruction by bringing forward and institutionalizing ideas that put downward pressure on our very society. In my humble opinion, if you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing, you are better off doing nothing. I&#8217;d rather have you in my way, than on the way to nothing. Besides, there&#8217;s a better than average chances that you are not out there by yourself.  There&#8217;s probably someone that you work with or care about blindly following you off the cliff!<span id="more-31"></span></p>
<p>So if you haven&#8217;t already, stop right now and take some wisdom from my grandmother &#8220;you&#8217;d better get your act together boy!&#8221; If you have the ability and the interest to read this, there is no time left for you. You must begin to define your purpose now. Let&#8217;s begin this discussion on a high note. I was reading my friend <a href="http://writeideasmarketing.wordpress.com/">Adrea&#8217;s</a> blog (who by the way is a brilliant writer) today and I was reminded of how important mind mapping is to the creative process. It connects your ideas and allows them to be free flowing, while linear at the same time. It helps you to remember and grow mentally. After developing my own mind map about &#8220;purpose&#8221; I came up with some brilliant ideas to share with you. Purpose, in my mind provides three solid characteristics to your mission; they are passion, reason and clarity. Each of these notions must be explored in depth if you want your mission or vision statements to matter even to you.</p>
<h1 class="MsoNormal"><span class="shw">Clarity for the Big and the Small</span></h1>
<p>A sense of clarity and focus helps to provide direction and depth. You should be able to see where your organization is going at all times. When family is concerned, nothing beats an absolute well defined set of values or principles to help shape and define tradition and connectedness. We all need guidance, so let your purpose do the hard work for you. The only thing you should worry about is execution. Once you set out on a worthy course that you are sure is right, you can fly along at lightning speed towards your goal with unwavering resolve and committed action. Can you imagine how good it would feel to simply know where your company was going or how it was growing? It would be impossible to widgetize you. You&#8217;d never be a drone again. You&#8217;ll be far too busy working your plan of relevant ideas and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll understand the big picture! From a birds eye position you&#8217;ll be able to see the road ahead and accurately assess how much energy and precious resources will be needed for your journey. Knowing the distance you&#8217;ll travel can help tremendously in planning a strategy to reach your destination. You&#8217;ll what to bring with you only the needed tools and discard all unnecessary baggage. Yes we all have baggage but some of us have luggage that is just too big to fit on the plane. If it doesn&#8217;t fit in your cargo hold of life well then the choice is clear, get rid of it! Don&#8217;t even try to bring along your emotional baggage from previous relationships or business connections.  You&#8217;d be better off with less clutter anyway. Who said that you have to read and respond to every e-mail, phone call or text message right away? A part of our collective problem is the way we define urgencies and how we let them de-rail our process. Imagine your self flying high above your goal. Jot down all the ideas that come to your head in terms of required resources. It will make getting ready much easier.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also critically important to take the worm&#8217;s eye view of the path you&#8217;ve chosen. Here is where you&#8217;ll see the day to day obstacles that require constant diligence to negotiate. Without this type of serious resolve you&#8217;ll simply quit on yourself or start making excuses of why this or that is too hard. Quit being such a ninny. You&#8217;ve got too much work to do. Getting a detailed perspective helps you feel comfortable with the route. You&#8217;ll need to know the features of the terrain. How thick is the brush? How dangerous are those big holes in the mud? Yes, I want you to get caught up in the minutia for a second. It&#8217;s important to mention that you can&#8217;t stay here.  We don&#8217;t want you to develop a fatal case of analysis paralysis.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">  </p>
<p>You&#8217;ll have to be able to skillfully break your tasks down to the cellular level to truly understand how to make things happen. You&#8217;ll need to know exactly what tactical and technical skills to employ. Before you can build a house, you&#8217;ll have to understand a thing or two about a hammer and nails. There&#8217;s no need  to wonder what&#8217;s up ahead or how long it will take you. You&#8217;ll have all of that figured out in short order. What daily actions do you need to engage in to move you and your team forward with a consistency that helps create team unity and an infectious pride? What do you have to do to sustain your momentum all the way? How do you have to think and speak?</p>
<h1 class="MsoNormal"><span class="shw">Supreme Reason Trumps Ignorance Everyday</span></h1>
<p>If you want others to see you as competent at what you do, you must get them to acknowledge the sheer brilliance of your thinking along the way. There needs to be a shared sense of reason as you move toward your objectives. Not only that, everyone must agree on these reasons or your project will get sabotaged maybe even taken over by a competitor or another department. No one gets points in the win column when they bring dissention and mutiny to everything. Instead take the time to lay out your plans in simple sequential almost mathematical order so that they make sense to engineers and accountants alike. The analytical types in your organization will be excited to witness your logical well thought out presentation. They&#8217;ll respect the radiance of your ideas and the methods by which you choose to express them. Everyone will see the razor sharp clarity of your keen intellect and deliver tremendous respect to you and your team.</p>
<p>Your rational process, to be fully understood and accepted needs to display and bear witness to the truth of your character. Don&#8217;t get this confused with charisma. Character is something that you can back up with fact! It&#8217;s your proven moral compass that helps you and your family to balance the ideas of right and wrong, fairness and injustice. It keeps you almost spiritually aligned with the right side of destiny and away from the tragic consequences of invisibility. This is the litmus test of the wise and the strong. You won&#8217;t fail this test if you keep the right ideas in front of you.</p>
<p>Ask the questions that help you get a grip your organizational efficiencies. What is going to make it easier for you to get to your goal? Can you automate any of your processes? What proven experience do you have on your team and how relevant is that experience today? Will you need to provide new innovation or finally just do it the right way (you know that stuff they put in manuals and books for you)? Can you keep your group aligned with the motives of the greater organization or does something have to change?</p>
<h1 class="MsoNormal"><span class="shw">Remember the Attraction of Fiery Passion</span></h1>
<p>Nothing generates more heat, more excitement than passion. Passion is in one sense tremendously motivating and attractive in another. If there is no heart energy to your mission it&#8217;s just like your body would be without a heart; it&#8217;s dead, a virtual &#8220;fait accompli&#8221;. You need to feel fueled and invigorated by your mission all of the time. If the need to get moving doesn&#8217;t wake you up every morning you&#8217;re probably not really on mission. My wife would say &#8220;you&#8217;re out of scope&#8221; (not the mouthwash you dope). I know that I get a yearning to coach people everyday. It&#8217;s almost as if my very life depended on helping someone achieve their goals. When I&#8217;m not on task I feel like I&#8217;m not complete; like I&#8217;m cheating somehow. Actually I am cheating; I&#8217;m cheating on myself and what&#8217;s even worse, I can&#8217;t divorce myself!  I wouldn&#8217;t sign the papers anyway.<br />
Admittedly, it&#8217;s tough to find this kind of passion but I think you can clearly see why it&#8217;s worth a try. So before you start to give up on your talents or attempt to subvert your fate, why not try to get in touch with yourself again. Just humor me and give it one more shot. Try to see yourself as an ongoing project, not a finished product. You are on your way towards become a uniquely special somebody. Don&#8217;t you deserve to give your self some acknowledgment and a little attention? My vote is yes!</p>
<p>Try this exercise on. Start with a blank piece of paper and write your name in the middle. Now think of the first word that describes you and write that next to your name. Picture that word, as you think of a word or two that describes the second word, do that again and again until you&#8217;ve exhausted all possibilities. Then go back to the center and think of another word that describes you and repeat the process over and over until you can&#8217;t go on. Keep going until you are sure that you&#8217;ve stretched your knowledge of self to the brink. This exercise should be quick but really powerful.</p>
<p>Congratulations, you&#8217;ve just mind mapped yourself. You should be able to take your map and start to see groupings and patterns of thought that define you.  You should see perspectives that you&#8217;ve never shared, not even with yourself. At the very least you&#8217;ll have a lot of fun!</p>
<p>You should have enough ammunition at this time to begin to see why those that are attracted to you are. In any case, show your mind map to those that are close to you. Engage them in discussion about you guessed it, you. See if they have some insight to add. Give them permission to be honest and accept the feedback positively. The best executive coach that I know is Marshal Goldsmith. He says that all you can say in times like this is &#8220;thank you&#8221;. Please do not attempt to rationalize or explain anything just say it, &#8220;thank you&#8221;.</p>
<p>The graceful lines of your personal mind-map and it&#8217;s accompanied pictures should fuel your desire.  It should bring you in-touch with your own inner beauty and help you become even more attracted to your highest ideas and convictions. Maybe you&#8217;ll even dig up that happy well adjusted child that you left behind on the playground many years ago. I&#8217;d like to meet that kid, wouldn&#8217;t you?</p>

<h1>It&#8217;s all about strategy!</h1>
<p>In this writing we hope to help you to clearly understand the mechanics of personal, interpersonal and organizational missions and how they apply to the achievement of real solid goals.  If you&#8217;ve been following my blog, by now you should realize that there is a subtle distinction between vision and mission.  For our purposes here and in my entire VisionQuest90 „¢ system, we consider &#8220;vision&#8221; a statement of where we are going; then &#8220;mission&#8221; a statement how we intend to travel.  We have to clarify this because these two points are often confused in the popular literature, worst yet in the corporate strategic plans of quite a few major organizations and municipalities.  The ideas of vision and mission must exist simultaneously.  If not, organizations will not be able to define a rational reason for their existence nor will they be able to garner support along the way.  The same is true for inter-personal and family planning.</p>
<p>You see my friends; mission itself actually sets the tone and begins to outline several critically unique ideas, mission:<span id="more-27"></span></p>
<ul>
<li> Provides a frame work for the tactics that will be employed</li>
<li> Gives an understanding of the resources that will be used</li>
<li> Carves out a unique place within the realm of possibility</li>
<li> Cancels out other options</li>
</ul>
<p>All of these ideas are best captured in well articulated and brief mission statements.</p>
<h1>Your Framework is Almost a Spiritual Place</h1>
<p>Yes!  We are talking about principles.  Principles guide all of our behavior weather we are in touch with them or not.  Your love for air is keeping you breathing right now.  Then again if you have air born allergies maybe your hatred of breathing makes you want to stop!  Good luck keeping that up for long.  Your body needs oxygen and it will make you pass out if it has to&#8221;¦&#8221;¦.. Anything to make you breath again!  The point is that principles govern and are a part therefore of any good personal or organizational mission statements.  They even govern if you leave them out.  Take my word on this and just include them.</p>
<p>Your core values and principles give real life to your mission.  It allows for human understand and introspection.  When people read a good mission statement it&#8217;s like a little light bulb of truth instantly begin to illuminate what was once a fog filled path.  We can be intimately involved with the symbolic nature of mission statements.  Take these words that conclude the US Declaration of Independence:</p>
<p>&#8220;as FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which INDEPENDENT STATES may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our fortunes, and our sacred Honor.&#8221;</p>
<p>It clearly states that in the execution of our nation&#8217;s independence we will defend ourselves, we will negotiate our own terms for peace; we will establish our own treaties for political and commercial activities as this is the only way of a free people.  Further more, we believe that God will protect us as we commit ourselves and our fortunes to one another as well as employ all the values that we hold dear in this mission. Somehow these men knew that if they weren&#8217;t really willing to align their moral compasses to similar aims and then make a total commitment without waver that their efforts to free this nation from tyranny would fail.</p>
<p>These were the simple rules that must exist for success to be had.  It has to be the exact same with your mission statement.</p>
<h1>Understanding Your Resources</h1>
<p>Clearly, no strategy can be executed without the proper tools.  We call these tools resources, but what has to be done to really use you resources well?  Well, you&#8217;ve got to be willing to invest the time in some critical analysis.  Getting answers to the following questions will be a tremendous help:</p>
<ol style="margin-top: 0in">
<li>What are all of the resources that I have at my disposal      that could possibly used to help me?       List them all out so that you can see them.  Remember their will be people, relationship      and emotional resources along with the tangible assets and expense related      resources.</li>
<li>Which of all of my resources do I have to get a better grip      on to really use them well?</li>
<li>How much time can I dedicate to research before I have to      make my assumptions and get started? Yes, you are going to have to make      some assumptions before you get started on your mission.  If you absolutely know everything, maybe      you&#8217;ve already achieved your goal and you&#8217;re just not giving yourself or      your team credit for a job well done.       Let&#8217;s get you a counselor so we can figure out your acceptance      issues!  Some of us have a hard time      letting go and moving on to the next big thing.</li>
<li>Ask yourself if there is time and money that needs to be      invested in training before you get started? How much time?  How much money?  Where is the best place to get this      training?  I&#8217;d start with the      internet.  You can&#8217;t beat the speed.</li>
<li>Lastly perform a SWOT analysis on every resource; meaning,      go in and assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat of      each situation.  What if a resource      fails?  What&#8217;s the back up plan?</li>
</ol>
<p>I hope that you can see how important this step is.  If you don&#8217;t really understand your resources before you embark on your journey; you can easily make the mistake of over preparing and carrying too much baggage or worse yet underestimating and not bringing the right tools with you.   I&#8217;m reminded of a story that one of my realtor clients told me about a house that they&#8217;d listed.  The owners new that they had lowered the price of the home so that it could move on the market quickly but they had no clue that they&#8217;d receive literally hundreds of offers on their property within one weekend.  Phones, faxes and email systems where overwhelmed with bids and re-bids on this property.  It might as well had been a live auction without the freedom and flexibility of the live part.  For the next three weeks the realtor and his clients were stuck trying to analyze the seemingly never ending stream of offers on a property that they all new they where taking a loss on.  The clients weren&#8217;t able to shop for a new home and where missing opportunities on some good properties.  This ultimately caused the obvious opportunity cost losses as well as well as a deficit in reputation for my client.</p>
<p>Clearly all of this could have been avoided with just a little forethought and preparation.  There was an opportunity to help the client set more realistic expectations, make more money and still move their house quickly.  My client could have been prepared with an emergency plan to improve contract gathering systems by streamlining his office efficiencies.   Maybe even working closely with other local realtors could have relieved the unexpected workload and allowed for quicker results.  In any case, a well thought out strategy would have helped immensely.</p>
<h1>Create your own uniqueness</h1>
<p>A solid idea of mission can help you define your actions, or create a system that is uniquely you.  Your personalized positioning or branding is critically important today with the sea of noise out there that is trying to capture the attention of your markets.  If you are looking for a new job or trying to grow a business you must capture the attention of your markets.   They&#8217;ll never trust you or your solutions if they don&#8217;t even know that you exist.  Everything you do and say must be aligned with mission; anything else is simply a waste of time.  Some of us are so clear about who we are and what we should be doing that being in business for ourselves is just a natural extension of our self expression.</p>
<p>Again, aligning your mission with real purpose helps you answer questions about relevance.  It helps you to seek synergy between sometimes apposing ideas as you maximize the quality of current behavior and move faster with higher levels of accuracy.  Who wouldn&#8217;t want to be here?  When you can demonstrate that you&#8217;ve got it together, others will accept and believe in you.  There&#8217;ll be fewer questions about your experience or examination into your character.</p>
<p>Your special attributes begin to make perfect sense when people can readily identify them as a part of who you are naturally.  We can all see how you come to this decision vs. another and conclusions seem naturally aligned.  Everything that you do seems especially designed for you and people can trust that you can do what do with a special ease and unique flare.  You&#8217;ll be so well aligned that others will want to emulate everything that you do.  You&#8217;ll get the question all of the time &#8220;how did you come up with that?&#8221; or &#8220;what made you think of this?&#8221;</p>
<p>With this kind of synergy you&#8217;ll be in absolute control.  You&#8217;ll be able to define your market space and identify clients and contacts extremely well.  You&#8217;ll be able to share these ideas with others and enlist their almost unconditional support.  Gaining this support from the right clients and the perfect contacts leads to further alignment and even faster results from your productive pursuits.  Your clients will feel like that they are a part of something special; something that they&#8217;ve never seen before</p>
<h1>Kill the confusion</h1>
<p>While a real sense of mission makes things clear but it also shoots down all of the negative options that naturally compete for your attention.  It&#8217;s an absolute truth that when you know what you want and where you are going, you will be more likely to get there.  You won&#8217;t pay attention to or regret the thing that you could have done.  There will be no room for &#8220;would of, could of or should of&#8221; in your world.  Even when there are thousands of messages coming at you everyday about ideas that you might embrace or services that you could buy, you can stay focused.  You can sift through all of the &#8220;so-called opportunities&#8221; and find the real gems that will propel you and your organization.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also true you will actually repel ideas that would take you off track or cause you to lose focus.  People that would other wise approach you won&#8217;t.  They&#8217;ll see that you wouldn&#8217;t be interested or supportive of anything that isn&#8217;t directly in-line with where you are going.  You wouldn&#8217;t waste your time or that of your team members on frivolous pursuits and quick fixes. You&#8217;ll only have time for real solutions and real talent.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to see why this aspect of mission is so important.  I wish you all of the best in your pursuit of real meaning.  Remember to embrace the inner child inside of you everyday because this won&#8217;t be easy, but well worth the price of admission.</p>

<p align="justify">I love the quote above for several reasons.  It helps us understand and provide a framework for accountability to ourselves.  It helps us begin to recognize our basic responsibility to continually make informed choices for everything that we do in life, always with careful remembrance of our past learning as we establish our future course of action.  Even to the extent that our future assumptions are incorrect we must take the required detour onto a new path.  It&#8217;s also important to be committed to your path but not so over committed that you are inflexible to change when change is obviously necessary.  There is a careful balance between passion and goal orientation that must continually be monitored and updated.  Yes, you have to plan to plan and keep planning and don&#8217;t forget to plan for that which you can&#8217;t plan, the unknown.<span id="more-24"></span></p>
<p align="justify">In terms of mission, the natural question of responsibility smacks us right in the face.  What is it really and who should be responsible for what?  Who gives the benefit, who receives the benefit and who ultimately benefits? In other words, the relationship between provider, client and stakeholder should be firm and clear.  What is each party to be responsible for and why? Without thinking through and codifying these kinds of ideas, an organization can be cast adrift on the sea of many undefined market places with no home and no focus.  My friend Laura Kowolski of Laughing Divas has a clear simple mission that drives her company and that is to &#8220;create love, peace and joy&#8221;.</p>
<p align="justify">Excellent mission statements always accomplish the following objectives they:</p>
<ul>
<li>Design the very nature of commitment</li>
<li>Create the gold standard</li>
<li>Recruit and focus torch bearers</li>
</ul>
<p align="justify">All of this raises the bar of effectiveness and promotes team work in a uniquely human way.</p>
<h2>The Nature of Commitment</h2>
<p align="justify">In order for there to be real commitment to consistent movement and action within an organization or family there needs to be a real statement of purpose.  This statement must be easily understood and most importantly remembered as a top of mind concern.  When your team members have to pull the mission statement out and read it whenever you refer to it, it&#8217;s NOT working.  A good mission statement compels team members to simply memorize it but to align there actions accordingly always.  It&#8217;s the living breathing pulse of an organization.  Here&#8217;s one from my fraternity &#8220;Ours is a brotherhood that gives its best in the hour of need.&#8221;</p>
<p align="justify">True, not only does a great mission create a positive imagery it begins to highlight core values and principles.  These principles and values should resound from the core of the organization in every movement and gesture.  For instance, the expression above tells my fraternity members the importance of giving our best performance at all times because &#8220;the hour of need&#8221; is our each and every waking hour on this earth.  We need to respect the work almost for the sake of the work itself because the job will never be done. Notice this is much different than goals which we&#8217;ll handle in a later discussion.  Mission is about behavior, style and direction.</p>
<p align="justify">You&#8217;ll also recognize how mission creates and maintains focus as it makes promises.  These promises must be kept less the organization and its leaders be judged as ineffective or worse, irrelevant.  The value is in the statement of trust the missions bring out.  It tells us what we can trust you or your organization for.  It shows everyone what drives your passion and energy.  By doing so, it reinforces the &#8220;magic word&#8221; to all organizational dynamics.  No, not please or thank you, the word is accountability!  There are also unique problems to expect in mission planning.</p>
<p align="justify">Every mission should have a measure of fluidity in that it does not indicate a hard core goal or process.  This kind of absolute regulation must be articulated elsewhere in an organizations goals and procedures.  In fact, mission should allow for a level of creativity to adjust direction when needed without breaking upon itself.  I remind you Dr. Angelou&#8217;s example above.  Sometimes you&#8217;ll need to course correct on the way towards your vision and your mission statement should not be so rigid in focus as to cause a total meltdown in the changing of time.</p>
<h2>The Gold Standard</h2>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in" align="justify">Clearly a mission statement must drive every team member to ever deeper levels of commitment and show them the rewards that connect them to their own very hearts.  It helps team members develop a sense of belonging and connectedness to the group as everyone begins to share the same standards of thinking.</p>
<p align="justify">Leaders learn from mission planning which behaviors are core to the organizations effectiveness and can use mission statements to remind themselves and team members what &#8220;we&#8221; are all about.  It starts to help them shape the ideas of about the solid important behaviors in an organization and to symbolize that behavior in meaningful ways.  It informs leadership conversations and keeps management directives both conscious and unconscious in line with the core values of the group.  Yes, good mission planning creates peace and harmony in an organization as everyone begins to &#8220;get it&#8221;.  Everyone sees where &#8220;we&#8221; are going and what direction &#8220;we&#8221; are going.</p>
<p align="justify">If you ever pay close attention to behavior and rhetoric of great CEOs, over the years you will hear the same key phrases and observe the same behavior over and over again.  It&#8217;s not because they haven&#8217;t grown or changed.  It&#8217;s because the same mission based symbolic gestures are required to keep their organization focused on the goal.  Any deviation can easily discredit the leader and create havoc amongst other leaders and managers which will eventually cause some form of organizational break down.</p>
<h2>Find and Create Torch Bearers</h2>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in" align="justify">Today it&#8217;s increasingly difficult to identify the real character of individuals.  It seems that because our machinated process obsessed society has opted to place more value on competence than it has in character it has damaged itself severely but not irreparably.  Management can turn the tide quickly by paying unwavering attention consistently and regularly to mission.  In fact, this is a sure fire method to inject character and competence back into an organization in a big way.</p>
<p align="justify">Every organization today runs on the most important fuel in the known world.  Yes &#8220;people power&#8221; keeps the whole thing moving forward or not.  It stands to reason that it&#8217;s easier to get the best out of people when they themselves value giving there best.  Having said that, all we have to do create the right synergy between recruiting and training. Then our people can stop worrying about retention and training cost overruns&#8221;¦simple, right?  WRONG!  Creating synergy within an organization that&#8217;s already broken is a Herculean expensive task!  It can&#8217;t be done without a tremendous amount of pain.  There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in" align="justify">Of course I say that we all should begin with the end in mind and fix it before it&#8217;s broken.  When you recruit your team from a well thought out mission it helps align your values to there&#8217;s instantly.  Conversely when you are in touch with your own deeply held values and beliefs it&#8217;s much easier to find organizations that will support you in a manner that works for you.  But don&#8217;t take my word for it, go test this yourself.   Ask an organization that you are considering working with to provide you with their mission statement.  Better still ask the reception at the front desk to tell you what it is.  If he or she begins to fumble around nervously in dusty drawers to find it you&#8217;ll know the whole story right then and there.</p>
<p align="justify">Mission driven organizations wear their values and principles on their sleeves, so much so that  each and every team member is in constant contact with the groups highest ideals.  You can ask a former IBM employees to tell you the mission of big blue even after a twenty year separation and they will never miss the mark.  Now that&#8217;s real indoctrination.  Just yesterday I heard the tune of my college fight song and the lyrics came back to me as if twenty years ago were yesterday.  And who could forget the words to the American Pledge of Allegiance as it speaks of personal commitment and intention towards high values and a moral code.</p>
<p align="justify">More than an external tool for indoctrination mission should help people find themselves or should I say remind them of there intrinsic value as human beings.  You should ask your team members how they see themselves fitting into the mission of the organization.  Get them to think outside of the basic job description mentality.  Help them understand the synergy between who they are and what the group is.  They&#8217;ll always respect you for helping them see where they fit in.  They&#8217;ll even help you light the way for others.</p>
<p align="justify">It&#8217;s important to never take your personal or organization mission for granted.  Refuse to move outside of it and revue it regularly.  I know that it&#8217;s easy to loose focus or to slack off exactly when a hard court press is needed, but stay resolved to fight hard and press on.  You&#8217;ll see the results in the maturation of your own personal identity and the commitment of your teammates.  You&#8217;ll experience the comfort of knowing who you are and what you&#8217;re about.  You&#8217;ll define success in your own way and enjoy your just rewards.</p>

<p>Like the &#8220;chicken or the egg&#8221; idea, it&#8217;s easy to get confused between &#8220;mission and vision&#8221;.  We&#8217;ve got a simple and clear answer to this dilemma.  Like the chicken and the egg, vision and mission are inextricably linked and individually valuable.  It doesn&#8217;t really matter which comes first because they both must exist and grow with each other simultaneously.  If vision is a statement of where and individual or organization is going then mission is a statement of how they plan to get there. This statement to be effective must answer some essential questions.  It must deal with; the recognition of who we are today, why our organization exists, what are the essential responsibilities for which we are willing to be held accountable and who are our major stakeholders and clients?  Most importantly it should deal with our objectives and the reasons for them, including the underlying values and principles.<span id="more-22"></span></p>

<h2>Mission Proves the Relevance of Existence</h2>
<p>The best mission statements that I have seen clearly delineate the importance of the people that have to carry it out.  It asserts a statement of existence&#8221;¦of being if you will.  Without a clear verbal distinction of who &#8220;we&#8221; are there is no mission!  Everything exists for a reason and the reason is always tied to a purpose.  You see&#8221;¦.no mission has real relevance without people to carry it out and no organization has relevance without a meaningful existence.  This delicate balance begins with the basic definition of self.  It answers the eternal question&#8221;¦.who am I?</p>
<p>It is therefore important for individuals and organizations to put a stake in the ground and claim their place in the universe.  Making a serious effort to define existence creates serious synergy within any organization. <p>Many organizations forget the importance &#8220;self definition&#8221; during their initial business planning stages opting instead to be defined by the markets that they choose to serve.  This is probably a good move for short term profitability but in the long term this idea will definitely take you off course and off mission.  The end result is organizational disaster that&#8217;s usually played out in downsizing or deep budget cut&#8217;s with bloated position descriptions of impossible expectations for team members.  In other word&#8217;s, it leads to blatant mismanagement of people and resources.  How&#8217;s that for success?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also most important to define who you serve.  Who will be the beneficiary of your organizations talent?  Who will grow, change or be positively affected by engaging you in some way?  Who is the target market that is waiting there for you to come along and finally take all of their troubles away with your solution?  No matter what, you have to define them and then put processes in place to find and attract them to you.  You might call this marketing and sales!</p>
<p>Everybody has stakeholders.  Who is depending on you to do what you do?  How will they benefit? To take ultimate test of relevance, explore what would or would not happen if you or your organization didn&#8217;t exist at all?  Would your clients be happy?  Would your team mates have a sense of belonging somewhere?  Would someone else be fulfilled doing what you do, being who you are?<br />
